Elizabeth Santana LCSW Profile Photo Thinking about starting therapy, but are not sure what to expect? Feeling nervous? It's understandable. The decision to start therapy can be scary. These feelings are quite natural.

Let me introduce you to what therapy is about.

Psychotherapy is time with yourself in the presence of another, actively engaging in meaningful conversations for the purpose of improving and maintaining your overall wellbeing.

The therapeutic process is really an exploration where we can focus on the presenting problems that you are grappling with as well any long-standing issues you may have. We look at the past, the present, and the interaction between the two. This can lead to a deeper understanding, greater self-awareness, thus offering you a fresh perspective on how you see yourself and your life.

In my experience, the strength of the relationship between the client and therapist is the primary catalyst for positive outcome. From the very beginning, my aim is to connect with you in a genuine way to foster comfort and trust that will allow for open communications between us. I offer lots of support and challenge and view this combination as optimal for you to grow as an individual.

Creating a therapeutic space to do the work is also a key ingredient to a successful therapy. I provide a safe and secured environment with reassurance that what is said is confidential. My attitude is one of respect, acceptance, and validation. You can expect to be seen and to be heard.

There are many reasons why people seek therapy. Some begin therapy because of depression or anxiety. Others come to therapy looking for help in reducing or managing life stressors. They may be having relationship difficulties; struggling with emotional or interpersonal challenges, and in need of support and guidance. Whatever the reason may be, there is nothing wrong with going to therapy.

Therapy in a nutshell provides an opportunity for you to be the center of attention for the benefit of healing and wellness. It is often the start for a healthy change. If you are considering therapy, perhaps there is a part of you that sees the need for it. The great news about therapy is that we often start out by needing it and as we gain new insights, we continue because we want to see it through.

Entering therapy can be your first step to a fresh start.
